Local child development expert, Linda Smith, spoke on 702 radio recently where she discussed some of the benefits that Lego products offer to growing kids. In following a particular design such as the Duplo Lego Police Patrol, children become familiar with the concept of following instructions, and playing within the rules.
On the other hand, if you take away the design instruction and let them go wild (free play) you allow them to explore their imaginations while trying to express what they have in their minds by using the objects in front of them. Of course, while there are unique benefits to letting kids play on their own, allowing a group of kids to play together allow for a completely different set of skills to be learned: Communicate, collaborate, and of course - Share!
Whichever way you look at it, whether you buy lego blocks for yourself or for your kids, there is no end to the fun you can have!
