Lego Duplo Early Development

Lego Duplo and your child’s early development

Date: 01/02/2016Who didn't love playing with Lego as a child? We sure did! (In fact - we still do!). Lego blocks have come a long way since our younger years, moulding and changing to meet the needs of their evolving consumers.

Lego Duplo is a perfect example of this: Made for little hands, the Duplo range is aimed at encouraging play and creativity in children as young as 1.5 years old. The larger blocks and bright colours encourage the development of both sensory and motor skills, learning to distinguish between colours and shapes long before they can put words to it all. Considering how much time we all spend on technology, it is crucial for children to understand objects in 3 dimensional sense without being restricted to what they perceive in 2D.

Local child development expert, Linda Smith, spoke on 702 radio recently where she discussed some of the benefits that Lego products offer to growing kids.  In following a particular design such as the Duplo Lego Police Patrolchildren become familiar with the concept of following instructions, and playing within the rules.

On the other hand, if you take away the design instruction and let them go wild (free play) you allow them to explore their imaginations while trying to express what they have in their minds by using the objects in front of them. Of course, while there are unique benefits to letting kids play on their own, allowing a group of kids to play together allow for a completely different set of skills to be learned: Communicate, collaborate, and of course - Share!

Whichever way you look at it, whether you buy lego blocks for yourself or for your kids, there is no end to the fun you can have!
